Position Description

We are seeking a Project Manager to provide project management support to two critical PBGH initiatives to PBGH: 1) Building Care Solutions, a grant-funded initiative to improve care for medically Complex patients across the state of California; and 2) Transforming Maternity Care, a national initiative to improve maternity care outcomes and cost. The Project Manager will work closely with the program leads for each program and will be responsible for designing, implementing, and monitoring each program’s project plan. Specific responsibilities are listed below. This is a grant funded position through mid-2018 with the possibility of extension.


Reporting Relationships

The position reports to the Director, Medically Complex Patients Program, with a dotted line to the Senior Manager, Maternity.


Core Duties and Responsibilities

Building Care Solutions (50%)

  • Track provider group recruiting efforts for three provider group cohorts.
  • Work with Director to plan and complete BCS training curriculum.
  • Draft learning session meeting agendas, materials, and activity guides with input from Director and Lead Clinical Consultant.
  • Finalize meeting materials and work with Project Coordinator to prepare learning session materials.
  • Monitor curriculum to ensure learning session consistency across three cohorts.
  • Work with learning session speakers to create interactive, dynamic presentations, ensuring presentations are submitted on time.
  • Manage external vendor for care coordination training sessions (total of 3 2-day trainings).
  • Meet with vendor after each session to debrief and make changes as needed.
  • Work with Director to create coaching model for BCS.
  • Draft coaching model for three types of coaching support: clinical, operational and ROI tool.
  • Track participant’s coaching support hours and contacts, providing updates to Director and other coaches on activities and results.
  • Schedule and convene Design Team meetings (teleconferences) and assist in preparation of meeting agendas and materials.
  • Maintain project plan to monitor timelines and deliverables, communicating to internal and external team members regularly about follow-up items and deadlines.
  • Support funder relations, attending monthly meetings with funder and supporting quarterly reporting, and more frequent reporting as needed.
  • Meet weekly with Director, reviewing project progress and raising issues as needed.

Transform Maternity Care (50%)

Project Management and Operational Oversight

  • Define project objectives and deliverables with senior staff in TMC.
  • Create, manage, and execute detailed project work plans under supervision of TMC Senior Manager.
  • Establish and maintain communications with external and internal project team members – includes status updates via emails, phone and in-person.
  • Monitor industry advances, legislative and regulatory developments in selected national and state health areas, related to TMC.
  • Track the collective impact of the TMC program and evaluate the program impacts on health outcomes and spending.
  • Help manage vendors and project consultants.

Fundraising and Grant Management for TMC

  • Support identification and tracking of potential funding opportunities.
  • Support the development of proposals with support and oversight of Senior Manager.
  • Conduct grant reporting and funder communications.

General Communications and Design 

  • Collaborate and coordinate with internal and external public relations staff to promote TMC work in national trade press, social media, blogs and op-eds.
  • Create communication materials, ensuring alignment of messaging among internal and external stakeholders.
  • Track TMC opportunities to offer expertise/insight into health care programs nationally, such as CMS, the Health Care Transformation Task Force (HCTTF), the Health Care Payment Learning and Action Network (HCPLAN), regional business groups.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Prior Experience


• 4-year degree, preferably in a health-related field, public policy, or business administration; a Masters degree in one of these fields is desirable but not required
• Demonstrated interest in health care, health care policy, and quality improvement
• Facility managing competing priorities
• Excellent verbal and listening skills; strong oral and written presentation ability
• Excellent time-management skills and attention to detail
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to effectively interact with colleagues and stakeholders
• Willingness to travel for work within California
• Proficient user of Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint; familiar with web-authoring and website management tools; willing and able to learn new software applications as needed
• Team-oriented self-starter able to work independently and proactively

At least four years of previous office work experience preferred. A strong candidate will have experience with project management, knowledge of issues and concerns in the California health care market organization and structure, and familiarity with basic U.S. health care policy structure and issues.
